The San Francisco 49ers will have a total of 13 selections in this year’s NFL draft. It is very unlikely that they use all of these picks. This draft is one of the deeper draft classes but doesn’t have that signature player that everyone wants to trade up for. The 49ers do have some needs that can be solved by the draft.

Here is one way the draft can play out:

Round 1 Pick 31: Datone Jones – DE UCLA

Datone Jones is a versatile player that can play inside or outside. He has an explosive initial burst that will allow him to penetrate gaps. Jones is experienced in the 3-4 and 4-3 defenses and has a variety of pass rush moves in his arsenal. He uses his active hands to disengage offensive lineman and create an easier path to the quarterback.

Round 2 Pick 34: John Cyprien – S Florida International

John Cyprien is just the kind of hard hitting player that the 49ers need in their secondary. Dashon Goldson was a big loss especially in run support. The 49ers will look to fill that void with his aggressive playing style. Cyprien has shown himself to have good ball skills with his ability to go up and snatch the ball out of the air.

Round 2 Pick 61: Travis Kelce – TE Cincinnati

This pick makes too much sense for the 49ers. Kelce is a Jim Harbaugh/Trent Baalke type of player with his blue collar mentality. This is a tight end that is a fiesty blocker and will always finish the play. He has soft hands and is a viable receiving option in the slot. His tall frame could be a red zone advantage.

Round 3 Pick 65: Tyrann Mathieu – CB/PR/KR LSU

The 49ers package their third round pick (#74) and their fourth round pick (#128) to get the Lions third round pick (#65). With the 65th pick the 49ers select Tyrann Mathieu. Mathieu provides instant impact in the return game. He is also able to play the nickel corner spot. He is a tenacious player that will also be able to blitz when lined up inside. Mathieu is a turnover machine that will help the 49ers defense get back to the +38 turnover defense of two years ago.

Round 3 Pick 93: Brandon Williams – DT Missouri Southern

Brandon Williams is an athletic lineman that can play anywhere on the line. He will be used primarily at nose tackle which is a spot that the 49ers got weak in when Rickey Jean Francois went to the Colts and Isaac Soapoaga went to the Eagles. Williams will be a rotational player on the 49ers defensive line.

Round 4 Pick 131: Marcus Latimore – RB South Carolina

The 49ers are a perfect fit for Marcus Latimore. He is a guy that needs to go to a team like the 49ers that can stockpile him while he gets all of the time that he needs to get healthy. Prior to the injury, Lattimore was looked upon as the best running back in the draft. He has a solid burst and rarely goes down easily.

Round 5 Pick 157: Brian Schwenke – C California

Brian Schwenke is a depth selection. He is experienced at guard and center. Schwenke can get his hands to get into the chest plate is able redirect defensive lineman in a hurry.

Round 6 Pick 173: Duke Williams – S Nevada

Duke Williams is a safety that is willing to throw his body into the mix with no reagrds. He is a versatile player that is able to line up over the slot receiver if need be. Williams takes very good angles against the run.

Round 6 Pick 180: Ace Sanders – WR South Carolina

Ace Sanders is a very dangerous player with the ball in his hands. He is not afraid to go across the middle despite his smaller size. Sanders has very good vision and is a threat to cut back against the flow of a play and make a big gain.

Round 7 Pick 237: Joe Kruger – DE Utah

Joe Kruger is the younger brother of Paul Kruger the former Raven OLB that signed with the Browns this off season. The 49ers get another versatile player that in this case can play defensive end in the 3-4 or 4-3 defense. Kruger is said to be a top effort player. He is known for his work ethic and football character.

Round 7 Pick 246: Jordan Rodgers – QB Vanderbilt

Jordan Rodgers is the younger brother of Aaron Rodgers. He is a very athletic quarterback that is able to buy in the pocket and keep his eyes down field. Rodgers also has a quick release similar to his brothers.

Round 7 Pick 252: Etienne Sabino – LB Ohio State

This pick is purely for the special teams unit. Sabino was all over the field making plays when he was healthy at Ohio State. He is a very athletic player that will become a core special teams player.
